Boost Readability: Enlarge Text in Apple Mail for a Better Experience

Enlarging text in Apple Mail

There are several ways to enlarge text in Apple Mail, depending on whether you want to enlarge the text of a single email temporarily or permanently change the default font size for viewing emails. You can change the default font and size for composing messages or use zoom in/out shortcuts for temporary adjustments while viewing messages.

Change Default Font and Size (For Composing Messages)

  • Open the Mail app.
  • Go to Mail > Settings (or Preferences on older macOS versions).
  • Select Fonts & Colors.
  • Click the Select button for Message font and select your desired font and size.
  • Close Settings.

Zoom In/Out (For Viewing Messages)

  • Open the email you want to view.
  • Use the keyboard shortcut Command + to zoom in and make the text larger.
  • Use keyboard shortcut Command – to zoom out and make the text smaller.

Note: You can also access zoom controls through the Format > Style menu and choosing Bigger or Smaller

Adjust Display Settings (For Accessibility)

  • Click on Apple logo () in upper left hand corner of your screen.
  • Select System Settings.
  • Scroll down the settings list and select, or search for, Accessibility.
  • Select Display and scroll down to the Text section.
  • Click Custom in the Text Size area.
  • For the Mail app select the desired font size and click the Done button.
  • Close Settings.

Note: You can also use the Text Size slider in the Display panel to set the default text size for the system and supported apps, including Mail. Enabling Zoom in Accessibility settings lets you zoom the entire screen, which also affects Mail.
